The Sierra of Alcaraz Greenway: a wild route through history and nature in Albacete

The Sierra de Alcaraz Greenway is one of those routes that still retains that authentic feel that many better-known trails have lost over time.

Peaceful, extensive and with a distinctly natural character, it is perfect for those looking to unwind by cycling or walking in the heart of nature.

Halfway between the plains of La Mancha and the mountains, this route offers a truly comprehensive experience: ever-changing landscapes, railway history and a constant sense of freedom.

Route type

  • Type: Greenway (former railway line)
  • Route: Linear
  • Use: Hiking and cycle touring
  • Surface: Compacted earth and gravel
  • Signposting: Good (with some sections still under development)

This is an accessible route with no major technical difficulties, ideal for both beginners and those looking for a long, gradual ride.

Distance and duration

  • Length: between 74 and over 100 km (depending on the sections open)
  • Duration by bike: 1–2 days
  • Duration on foot: 3–5 stages

The main route connects Albacete with Alcaraz, although the project continues to expand with the aim of extending towards Andalusia as part of the so-called Camino Natural del Renacimiento.

History: the train that never arrived

One of the most interesting aspects of this greenway is its origins. It follows the route of the old Baeza–Utiel railway, an ambitious infrastructure project begun in 1927 that never actually came into operation.

For decades, tunnels, stations and viaducts lay abandoned in the middle of the countryside. Today, that failed project has been transformed into an opportunity for active tourism, allowing visitors to explore a ‘ghost’ railway line steeped in history.

One of the great attractions of the Sierra de Alcaraz Greenway is its diverse landscape. Along the route you will pass through:

  • Open plains of La Mancha
  • River valleys such as those of the River Jardín
  • Lakes and wetlands ideal for birdwatching
  • Areas of Mediterranean scrubland
  • Mountainous terrain as you approach the Sierra de Alcaraz

The transition is gradual, giving each section its own character.

Best time to do the route

  • Spring: the best option (mild temperatures and the landscape at its finest)
  • Autumn: highly recommended for the colours and weather
  • Summer: intense heat, especially in areas without shade
  • Winter: moderate cold, with clear days

If you choose summer, it is best to set off early and avoid the middle of the day.

Climate

The climate is typically continental:

  • Dry, hot summers
  • Cold winters
  • Significant temperature contrasts

👉 It is essential to carry water, sun protection and plan each stage carefully.

Difficulty

  • Level: Easy – Moderate
  • Elevation gain: Very gentle (typical of old railway lines)
  • Demand: Moderate due to the distance

Although technically straightforward, the total length can make it demanding if completed in full.
