Forests cover approximately one third of the earth&#8217;s land surface and are home to more than 75% of the world&#8217;s biodiversity. They also provide livelihoods for around 1.6 billion people, including more than 2,000 indigenous cultures.<\/p>\n<p>Forests are essential for:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Food security:<\/strong> They provide food such as fruits, seeds and bushmeat.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Energy:<\/strong> They provide wood for cooking and heating.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Agriculture:<\/strong> They host pollinators and contribute to soil enrichment.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Climate regulation:<\/strong> They absorb carbon dioxide, helping to mitigate climate change.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Biodiversity conservation:<\/strong> They are home to countless species of flora and fauna.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>However, deforestation and forest degradation continue at an alarming rate, contributing significantly to global greenhouse gas emissions and exacerbating climate change. Sustainable forest management is therefore essential for a greener and healthier future.<\/p>\n<h4>Chiruca&#8217;s commitment: The Chiruca Forest<\/h4>\n<p>In line with the importance of preserving our forests, Chiruca has undertaken an exemplary initiative: the Chiruca Forest. This project was born with the aim of offsetting the CO\u2082 emissions derived from its manufacturing process and contributing to reforestation. Located in the Riojan municipality of Bergasa, the Chiruca Forest covers 24 hectares where 24,000 holm oaks (Quercus ilex), a native species ideal for the area, have been planted.<\/p>\n<p>Since its inauguration on 9 November 2015, the Chiruca Forest has grown and consolidated itself as a symbol of the company&#8217;s commitment to the environment. In addition to reforestation, Chuca has involved the local community, including students from Arnedo schools, in planting and environmental education activities, thus promoting ecological awareness from an early age.<br \/>\nImportance of Initiatives such as the Chiruca Forest<\/p>\n<p>Projects such as the Chiruca Forest are fundamental to:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Mitigating climate change:<\/strong> planted trees absorb CO\u2082, reducing the carbon footprint.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Restore ecosystems:<\/strong> Reforestation helps to recover degraded areas, promoting biodiversity.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Raise public awareness:<\/strong> Involving the community in these initiatives educates and raises awareness about the importance of forests.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>On this International Day of Forests, it is vital to recognise and support efforts to protect and restore our forests.
