Hiking among golden waterfalls: autumn in Plitvice National Park

When summer bids farewell and the first cold spells herald the change of season, Plitvice National Park is transformed into a fairytale setting.

The intense green tones give way to a palette of ochres, oranges and golds that are reflected in the water like a living mosaic. Walking among its lakes and waterfalls in autumn is to discover a new form of silence, one that is only broken by the constant murmur of the water and the rustling of leaves underfoot.

Located in the heart of Croatia, Plitvice is the country’s oldest national park and one of the most beautiful in Europe. Declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO, its landscape looks like something out of a postcard: 16 cascading lakes connected by more than 90 waterfalls, wooden walkways winding through the forest, viewpoints suspended over the water and wildlife that still roams freely. In autumn, everything takes on a different atmosphere, quieter and more intimate, as if the park invites you to stroll leisurely and let yourself be carried away by the rhythm of nature.

A labyrinth of lakes and trails

Plitvice National Park has a network of well-marked trails that allow you to enjoy it at different paces. The trails are grouped into eight main itineraries (from A to H), which vary in length and difficulty. Some can be covered in just an hour, while others can take a whole day.

The wooden walkways are one of the park’s hallmarks: they literally float on the water, allowing you to cross lakes, streams and waterfalls without disturbing the environment. Every bend in the path offers a new perspective—a waterfall appearing among the trees, a changing reflection, a stream that seems to stand still. One of the most recommended sections is the circuit that runs along Lake Kozjak, the largest in the park, from where electric boats also depart to cross it.

If the weather is good, it is worth climbing up to the Veliki Slap viewpoint, Plitvice’s highest waterfall with a drop of 78 metres. From there, the spectacle of the water gliding through the autumn colours of the forest is difficult to forget.

Tips for enjoying Plitvice in autumn

Visiting Plitvice in autumn is a very different experience from visiting in summer. The temperatures are milder, the influx of tourists decreases and the light, more golden and oblique, enhances the contrasts of the landscape. It is the ideal time for those who enjoy peaceful hiking, direct contact with nature and photographic walks.

It is advisable to be prepared: the ground may be wet from rain or morning dew, so comfortable footwear with good traction is essential. It is also advisable to bring a light waterproof jacket, some food and water, and, of course, a camera or mobile phone ready to capture reflections and waterfalls. The paths are well signposted, but it is worth consulting the official map at the entrance to plan your route according to the time available and the physical fitness of each visitor.

Getting up early is an excellent decision: the early hours of the day are the quietest and offer the best light to enjoy the park in its purest state. If it is foggy, don’t be discouraged; on the contrary, the mist gives Plitvice an almost magical air.

A paradise that demands respect

Plitvice’s balance is fragile, and its beauty depends on the respect of those who visit it. For this reason, the park prohibits swimming, straying from the paths or feeding the animals. Keeping your distance from wildlife and not leaving any rubbish behind are simple gestures that ensure this environment remains intact for future generations.

Walking through Plitvice is also a lesson in humility: you realise that nature needs no artifice to thrill, only care and silence.

The rhythm of autumn

At the end of the tour, when the sun begins to set and the forest is tinged with reddish tones, visitors feel that they have experienced more than just an excursion. Plitvice in autumn is a reminder of the ephemeral beauty of the seasons, of how each falling leaf is part of a cycle that is renewed year after year.

Few places offer such a complete experience for the senses: the sound of water, the smell of wet earth, the feel of wood underfoot and the sight of the forest reflected in the lakes. Every step invites you to stop, breathe and look calmly.

Because, in Plitvice, autumn is not just something to be contemplated: it is something to be walked through.
